Membrane switch

A membrane switch is a switch panel manufactured on a thin membrane using printing technology. It is suitable for applications that use low voltages and currents, and where the switch can be non-locking. A membrane switch is generally connected to a separate control circuit. The switch can be easily and reliably designed to suit the product, functionally as well as visually.

The membrane can be manufactured to act as the switch, or metal couplers can be implemented to engage the switch. The use of a metal arc achieves the tactile feel of a keypad for the user, the desired key pressure being obtained through a suitable choice of arc. Windows for displays and LEDs can be printed on the surface film of the membrane switch, and embossing employed to create special effects.

Membrane switches have many benefits

In contrast to its mechanical counterpart, a membrane switch is thin and light, and its structure is resistant to wear. In addition, the switch is splash- and dust-proof. To facilitate use, the membrane switch enables the implementation of a backlight for the keypad. Convenience and ease-of-use can also be enhanced by embossing various effects onto the surface – number keys can made to protrude from the rest of the surface, for example.

Protection and durability with membrane switches

The membrane switch protects the key mechanics and device electronics from dirt and other substances that may compromise functionality. In addition, windows and information that increase ease-of-use can be screen printed inside the membrane. Alternatively, numbers, letters, braille characters or the company logo, for example, can be embossed on the switches to improve the feel of the keys.
